Grilli Type was founded in 2009 by Thierry Blancpain and Noël Leu. GT makes type with a point of view, type that conveys meaning beyond the words it spells out. It pushes beyond technical excellence to explore what quality a typeface really has: What's the story behind it? What kind of personality does it have? The studio now numbers six, with colleagues spread across the world. The foundry is still based in Lucerne Switzerland, but is active on a global scale. Their collection of fonts pays homage to the best Swiss tradition. Impeccable in its craft, it features classic design sensibilities paired with a contemporary aesthetic. Another sharp characteristic of the foundry is how they look into innovative ways to show off the typefaces that their designers produce, and come up with fun and playful mini-sites in the process. One can see the output of GT in various projects - from Spotify’s interactive website that shows how Bon Iver fans are listening to the singer-songwriter’s new album i,i to Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke’s zine featuring some of the biggest names in music, film and environmentalism.
Melba Symposium is proud to welcome Noël Leu (founder) and Reto Moser (lead designer). They are in Sofia thanks to the kind support of Fontfabric.
