For the first year, the International Design Festival MELBA includes in its program the exhibition “Diploma Project” that aims to present debut students with their diploma works in various fields – from sculpture, through illustration, to scenography and fashion. The exhibition also seeks to focus on what excites the young generation today and how they make sense of tomorrow.

After a careful selection for the first edition of the series, the eye turns to the promising young talent Spas Yordanov, who graduated this year from the Ceramics and Porcelain programme at the Department of Visual Arts at New Bulgarian University (NBU). Within the exhibition Spas will present his diploma project, evaluated by Assoc. Prof. Monika Popova and bulgarian artist Alina Papazova.

The sculptural collection, entitled “Ceramic Lords of the Four Elements”, is composed of ceramic sculptures that take us into the fantasy worlds of their author. The six sculptures embody six diverse representatives of the vast mythical dragon world that has inspired Spas since his childhood until today.

“Why dragons, you may ask? Ever since I was a little boy I have been drawn to mythical creatures and reptiles. Like all children, I lived in my own fictional world and often when I was asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I would answer: I want to be a dragon. Over time I became interested in their place in people’s lives, their presence in different cultures and the need to have stories of good and bad dragons. I wanted to find out what it was like to be a dragon in the human world and why people had the need to invent such a creature,” says the 23-year-old author from the Ceramics Studio of the NBU.

Lords of the Four Elements will be displayed at the UniCreditStudio Gallery with an opening on November 8, 2022 at 6:00 pm.
